Happy Friday Y'all!
Last weekend, along with celebrating good Friday and Easter in the miraculous sacrifice our Savior made on our behalf, we were also toasting our good friends Adam and Katelyn Guthrie on their one year anniversary. My husband and Adam have been friends since high school and he and I later became great friends; he was even a bridesman in our wedding, where I finally got to meet Katelyn face to face as she took the lead being our impromptu wedding coordinator at our rehearsal dinner. We've been apart of their story since the beginning- I remember Adam asking advice on how to surprise her when he first asked her to be his girlfriend, when we drove up from Florida secretly and planned their perfect proposal on a Christmas Tree Farm, their engagement photos the spring after, and were of course their photographers and videographers at their wedding at the Evergreen Plantation back home. It only seemed right that I invite them to stay in our couple's cottage for a romantic weekend for their first anniversary- and justly that we take photos to commemorate their sweet day.
Here are some sweet photos and insight on their life and what they have learned about marriage along the way.
When is your anniversary?
April 16, 2016
How long have you been married?
One year
Who is the better cook?
Katelyn, although Adam tries! He does the grilling!
Do you have any kids/pets?
We have two rescue dogs, Roxie and Mac. They are our only children for now, but we definitely want kids in the future.
What do you do for a living? Has that changed since you've been married?
Katelyn is an office assistant for a doctor's office and Adam is a Deputy Sheriff. We have both been at these jobs since we got married.
What's the best thing about being married?
For Katelyn, it's getting to share all of life's little things together, like having coffee in the morning or sitting on the back porch by a fire. Getting to harass that one special person for the rest of your life!!
Who is more pleasant in the morning?
Adam, for sure, Katelyn is the worst morning person.
What tv shows do you binge watch together?
NCIS, Prison Break, Friends, Last Man Standing, and One Tree Hill.
What do you do for fun?
We love to go antiquing and we laugh all the time.
Who is more likely to sing in the shower?
We both love to perform concerts while we are in the shower. Thank goodness they make waterproof speakers!
What is your favorite memory of marriage thus far?
Getting to make the house a home together. It has come a long way since we first purchased the house and I love that we have done all the hard work ourselves.
What's on your bucket list to do together?
We would love to travel before we have kids.
Who is the first to apologize?
Adam is normally the first to apologize, but Katelyn is working on it.
When do you laugh the hardest?
Any time Adam speaks or does anything really.
Describe your relationships in one word.
Pious
Who controls the remote?
Whoever can get to it first.
How do you reconnect after the stress of work and life?
Relaxing with each other, friends, and coffee.
Where have you traveled together?
We have been to North Carolina and Florida together, but hope that list grows soon.
Where will you travel next?
Edisto Beach.
What would you tell a bride and groom about planning a wedding, that you may have stressed over that you didn't have to?
I can't think of one specific thing, but I will say it's so important to keep reminding yourselves why you're getting married in the first place. Don't lose sight of the fact that this is about you marrying your best friend and soulmate, the wedding is important, but not as important as the marriage that is being celebrated that day. Remember it's only one day and in the grand scheme of things its very minute. The only thing that really matters that day, aside of everything else, is saying I do to your bride.
What little things used to drive you nuts are you having to compromise on?
For Katelyn, it's agreeing on where things go in the house. We don't always agree on it, but we find ways to compromise. Not being able to constantly have the house in order with everything put away where it belongs. It's life, it gets dirty, it's messy, there is mountains of laundry to do, it's OK.
What do you want your marriage to look like in 5 years? 50 years?
In 5 years I hope we are blessed with children and even more in love than we are today. In 50 I hope we are either traveling or settled down and enjoying being grandparents.
What makes you feel loved most about your husband? What makes him feel loved most?
I feel loved most when Adam does little things for me like opening my door or buying me a little treat just because. I feel most loved when Katelyn does the laundry or dishes, because she knows how bad I can't stand to see them pile up.
What is the same about your relationship since you got married?
Honestly, there are a lot of things that are the same, but the one that sticks out the most is how much we laugh. We love to laugh and there are never days when we don't laugh together or at each other.
What is different about your relationship since you got married?
We get to spend a lot more time together, and we communicate a lot better.
What marital advice would you give someone who is about to get married that you may not have known before?
Relax! Marriage is hard, so don't sweat the petty things. If it isn't going to matter in 3 weeks, then why let it matter now. Be transparent to your spouse and work through things together. That is what this thing is about in the first place. Be forgiving. Peter denied Jesus three times in the garden before he was crucified. Jesus still died for Peter and days after his death when he resurrected, Jesus had given Peter a moment to tell him that he loved him, three times.
Along with a stay in the cottage and an anniversary session, we made them a scrumptious farmhouse dinner {chicken parm} and served it under the stars and our outdoor patio (even Waddles and Squirt joined them for an authentic touch haha- you never know when they are going to make their appearance on your occasion).
Cheers and many more years together to come sweet friends!
xoxo,
Lauren
