Hey y'all,
I am so thrilled to share a new segment of our JPF blog with you.... drum roll please!!!
Welcome the Creative Spotlight. Each month (on the first Friday) we will feature a select and highly regarded creative entrepreneur and their business along with some of their personal stories in an interview blog. We are eager to partner with locals and small business owners to join our tribe and love on them like family... and introduce them to you, showing just how fabulous they are and how they would love to serve YOU! We hope you enjoy!
Meet Katelyn from Kate G Photography! Katelyn and I have been friends for years. You see, it was just meant to be. Her husband, myself and Joel (my husband) grew up together in the small town of Anderson, South Carolina. It was inevitable that we would end up collaborating long before we ever met. Katelyn kindly helped me second shoot a wedding and then I had the great honor of shooting hers and Adam's wedding last April. And it was BEAU-TI-FUL!
Enough chit chat... let's get to the good stuff. Below you will find photos from her portfolio and some personal ones as well. If you are looking for a great photographer with a sweet and passionate personality... Katelyn and Adam might be the perfect fit. Enjoy!
How old are you (if you are ok with sharing…totally optional)?
I am 23.
What is the name of your creative business? What do you do?
My business is Kate G Photography. My husband and I photograph lifestyle sessions and the occasional wedding.
Where do you live? Where is your business located?
Adam and I live in Pendleton, SC. Kate G Photography is located in Pendleton, SC, but we are up for session in surrounding upstate areas!
How long have you been in business?
I have been doing photography for about a year now, but have had a love for photography for quite some time now.
What sets you apart in your business? What do you aspire others to know about your business?
Kate G Photography is all about making each client feel like their experience is created just for them. We strive to make each client feel special, and give them an experience that leaves them with quality images that reflect who they are, and with memories to last a lifetime. At Kate G Photography we want our clients to feel loved and like they can be themselves in front of the camera. We often refer to simplicity when we talk about our business, because we clients to know they can relate to our brand and automatically get a sense for who we are as a couple and photographer team.
Who or what inspires you in your personal life?
My family is a huge inspiration! They are always encouraging me to do my best and to do what makes me happy.
How do you get un-stuck if you’re in a creative rut?
When I am feeling less than creative I tend to go outside and unplug for a little while. Being in nature is so calming and allows me to recharge and come back to my work with new energy and a renewed mind.
How do you feel about your organization and time management skills?
I am SUPER organized! If I don't have my life written down in my planner or things in their place I have a hard time functioning. I am normally very motivated to get things done in a timely manner so that I can spend more time with family, but I have been known to procrastinate a time or two because I'd rather be outside than stuck at my desk editing for hours.
What is your favorite food?
My all-time favorite food is my Nana's rice and gravy. I know that is such a Southern staple, but I seriously could eat it every day and not get tired of it.
Favorite memory?
To date, my favorite memory is the day I married Adam. Our day was filled with so much love and laughter and I think about it constantly.
Do you have a routine?
Depending on what day of the week it is. I normally have a more structured day during the work week, but on weekends I prefer to not be so scheduled and just let life happen. Structure is good for me, but I also feel it's just as good to let go of routines and schedules and just take in the day for what comes with it.
How do you spend your time when you’re not working?
If I am not working I tend to be on the couch with Adam and our dog Mac, or outside working in the garden or on my latest project.
What are your current guilty pleasures?
My current guilty pleasure is sitting on the couch with a cup of coffee watching a good show on Netflix.
Describe yourself in one word. Describe your business in three words.
I would describe myself as extroverted, in every sense of the word. Three words that describe Kate G Photography would be simple, joyful, and memorable.
Favorite color?
Any shade of PURPLE!
Tell us about your journey to start your own business.
I started out just photographing anything close to me like, my dog, the barn next to my parents house, anything. As I began to photograph my niece and nephew at family get togethers, it was then that I realized I loved being able to capture the joy and love in their faces and the memories we were making. Having those photos to look back at years from now made me realize I wanted to create photos like that for other families. I want to give others the happiness that I feel when I look back at photos of my niece picking apples in a yellow wagon and loving every minute of it. The way I see it, it's the simple things in life that we overlook or forget about 2-5 years from now, and the mission behind my business is to capture those moments for people so that they can experience the love and memories over and over again.
What is a quote that keeps you focused and motivated?
The Golden Rule has always been a motto for me throughout my life. My Mama taught me from a very young age to treat others the way you want to be treated, and it has always stuck with me in everything I've done. It really helps me approach each day with a open heart and mind, and it keeps me motivated towards being a better person, wife, daughter, co-worker, and photographer.
Where would you love to be with your creative business in 3 years?
I would love for Kate G Photography to be continuously growing and serving others. My hope is that we will have a larger client base and our name will be known for our quality images and the unique experience we create for our clients.
How has your brand evolved into what it is today?
I have had to do a lot of soul searching to determine how I wanted our brand to be represented. I started out not knowing where this brand would go, and with every session, I began to feel that our brand needed to be something more than just a name. Every idea I had I told myself "that's really pretty" or "that's fitting for now", but it didn't reflect me, Kate G. After several hours of thinking about fonts, colors and overall how our brand would be viewed, I realized I was making this way harder than it needed to be. At that moment I went back to three simple words that I always say, "less is more". It was then that I decided our brand would be simple, joyful, and memorable ---and I ran with it. I wanted those three words to reflect our brand and everything we do within our brand. So now we create each client's experience based on those three words and make sure we are truly representing Kate G Photography.
